This is a rare opportunity to experience Chardonnay like never before

At special request, we pulling out a Gold Decanter Award-winning 2006 Chardonnay from the museum for you.

I blind-tasted this vintage recently at City Wine in Perth alongside our new-release 2019 Chardonnay.

Guess what?

I did a poll of who preferred the younger vs mature vintage and you may be surprised to hear a majority preferred the older vintages.

(I was delighted!)

All our Chardonnays are 100% barrel fermented and our goal is to bring out the natural fragrance as much as possible without creating the 'butter bomb' you might come to expect of an Australian Chardonnay.

Our signature style is a fruit-forward Chardonnay with a finish that just gets longer and longer with age.

To taste three of these, side-by-side, at different stages of maturity...

...you won't get this opportunity again!

Vertical Tasting

We love vertical tastings at UMAMU Estate.

They're an opportunity to explore the same fruit in the same parcel at different stages of ageing in the bottle.

Not only does a vertical tasting condense years of wine tasting knowledge into one evening, it's an opportunity to see how you do with wines of different maturity.

You will discover new-found love for wines you might not otherwise pick.

The vertical tasting below is special as it contains a Decanter Gold alongside a 'classic' Margaret River Chardonnay rated 96-points (James Halliday).

2006 Chardonnay

2006 was the coolest vintage Margaret River has seen in decades.

The Chardonnay berries were unaffected by heat stress and developed a complex, fragrant, fruit-driven profile.

The softness and length added from age in the bottle together make a Chardonnay that is quite unlike any other Australian Chardonnay you will find. You get layers and layers of complexity and then suddenly the bottle's finished!

$120 a bottle.

P.S. – The 2006 Chardonnay has a screwcap so no chance of corking.

Reviews

Gold – 2009 World Wine Awards (Decanter)

94 points – Halliday 2009 Edition (James Halliday)

"Highly fragrant nectarine and grapefruit aromas and flavours; strongly fruit-driven, but not simple; excellent length."

94 points – Ray Jordan's WA Wine Guide 2009

"This cool vintage was absolutely perfect for Chardonnay; this one is a beauty. Crisp and tight with a strong grapefruit and mineral thread running the length of a very long palate. Superb palate texture with real persistence. A finer style and thoroughly beautiful."

2014 Chardonnay

Excellent rainfall in 2013 set the stage for a fine 2014 vintage in Margaret River.

There was a severe summer heatwave across other parts of Australia and spring storms destroyed up to 40% of the Chardonnay crop at other vineyards in Margaret River.

But with minimal summer rainfall 2014 was a 'classic' Margaret River vintage for us.

UMAMU Estate 2014 Chardonnay won our highest white wine rating from James Halliday with 96 and it's a wonderful experience to taste alongside the uncharacteristically complex 2006 Chardonnay.

$80 a bottle.

Reviews

96 points – Halliday 2018 Edition (James Halliday)

"A deceptive wine-the first reaction is that it is simply immaculately balanced and poised, but then the power and the zesty citrus pith and aftertaste arrive. The white peach of the mid-palate remains untarnished, as does the overall integrity of the wine."

92 points – Huon Hooke

"Medium to full yellow colour, restrained for its age, and the bouquet offers toasted hazelnut, butter and honey, in tandem with a rich, full-bodied palate. Plenty of alcohol weight, but lively acidity keeps that full-throated richness dancing."

2018 Chardonnay

The 2018 vintage felt cool but had warmer daytime temperatures leading up the harvest.

Margaret River was also treated to a 'mega blossom' of Marri trees (the most in living memory) and this kept bird pressure low.

UMAMU Estate 2018 Chardonnay was barrel fermented as with all our Chardonnay vintages and is a prime example of our signature style that blends ripe tropical fruits with light oaking and neither overpowering the other.

Goes elegantly with grilled seafood and creamy sauces.

$60 a bottle.

Reviews

94 points – Halliday 2018 Edition (James Halliday)

"Gleaming straw-green; a lusciously rich chardonnay, all its wares laid out before you. It needs food, but will happily accompany every dish."

92 points – The Wine Advocate Robert Parker (Joe Czerwinski)

"Umamu's 2018 Chardonnay was 100% barrel fermented yet shows little overt oak, allowing the ripe pear, melon and citrus flavors to shine. It's medium to full-bodied, with a plump, ample richness on the palate and a long, silky finish."
