Two UMAMU Estate Cabernets Selected in Young Gun of Wine's Margaret River Deep Dive

UMAMU Estate is delighted to share that two of our Cabernet Sauvignons have been selected by the expert panel at Young Gun of Wine as among the finest expressions of Margaret River Cabernet in their latest Deep Dive feature — with both wines chosen entirely blind.

Young Gun of Wine is one of Australia's most respected independent wine publications, dedicated to discovering and championing the best wines the country has to offer. Their Deep Dive series brings together a carefully assembled panel of industry experts — winemakers, sommeliers, wine educators, and merchants — to taste blind and identify the wines that compel the most. For their Margaret River Cabernet Deep Dive, published 10 July 2026, the panel comprised six judges: Sarah Pidgeon (winemaker, Wynns Coonawarra), Evan Heisz (wine consultant, MW Wines), Morgane Pavri-Rieme (winemaker, Mac Forbes Wine), Brendan Cannon (sommelier, Carlton Wine Room), Jenny Polack (wine educator, Bacchus Wine Academy), and Charlie Redmond (wine merchant, Seddon Wine Store). Every wine was tasted without labels — meaning the results reflect nothing but what was in the glass.

Two UMAMU Estate wines made the final selection:

• 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon — selected by Jenny Polack

• 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Museum Release — selected by Charlie Redmond

2018 Cabernet Sauvignon — Finesse, Herbs and a Classic Margaret River Medium-Body

Jenny Polack, wine educator at Bacchus Wine Academy, chose our 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon among her top six wines of the entire blind tasting lineup. In her words:

"I love the finesse of this wine! Full of minty, leafy and Provence-style herbal notes with bramble and blackberry sitting behind. The tannins are fine, firm and only lightly grippy – perfectly balancing the mainly savoury flavours on the palate. A classic medium-bodied style with soft acidity on the finish – this would make a great lunch wine alongside rillettes and roasted veggies."

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Museum Release — Bottle Age, Bay Leaf and Something Truly Special

Charlie Redmond, wine merchant at Seddon Wine Store, selected our 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Museum Release among his top six wines of the day — a wine he described with real enthusiasm:

"Savoury expressions of Cabernets are always fun. In the glass, the deep and brooding crimson fading into terracotta around the edges indicates some time spent maturing in bottle… showing clearly defined bay leaf, fig jam, sweet nutmeg, clove and Birdseye chilli notes wrapped around bottle-aged characters of hoisin sauce and molasses. This is a wine that is ready to drink today – the tannins are broad but resolved… anything that needs to be aged to bring back memories of youth is certainly something special."
