Dear UMAMU family,
Something very unique for you in the world of online wines – a vertical tasting pack of 6 Margaret river Chardonnays!
Vertical tastings are one of my greatest greatest pleasures in the winemaking industry. Our philosophy at UMAMU Estate is to release our Margaret River wines when they are ready. This means they have had time to develop and 'balance up' in the bottle so there are no screaming parts.
Each vintage in the Margaret River wine region, where we are based, can be a different tasting experience – due to degree days (warmth accumulated over the season), acidity, alcohol content, weather, rain, disease risk, harvest dates and so much more. As we strive to make each vintage as balanced as possible, it means we can appreciate the incredible and diverse bounty of flavours, side-by-side, in a vertical tasting.
So please do join us in tasting six vintages of our Chardonnay from the Margaret River! Our line up is 2018 (latest release), 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012 & 2008 (all from museum cellar).
I conducted a virtual vertical tasting of all these wines with my former wine lecturer the wonderful Lindsay Corby (ex La Trobe University), of Cosmo Wines in the Yarra Valley, Australia.
We had so much fun and I think we even came up with a new term for the wine industry – froaky, meaning somewhere between fruity and oaky!
As ever, so much more to learn and have fun with.
Enjoy wine pairing? Why not try our Chardonnay with Bouillabaisse Seafood Stew?
If you would like a combination of our wines that is not listed on our cart or for delivery outside Australia, please contact us on umamu@umamuestate.com.
Cheers!
Reviews
2018 UMAMU Estate Chardonnay
"Gleaming straw-green; a lusciously rich chardonnay, all its wares laid out before you. It needs food, but will happily accompany every dish."
—94 points from James Halliday
"Umamu's 2018 Chardonnay was 100% barrel fermented yet shows little overt oak, allowing the ripe pear, melon and citrus flavors to shine. It's medium to full-bodied, with a plump, ample richness on the palate and a long, silky finish."
—92 points from Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Joe Czerwinski
2016 UMAMU Estate Chardonnay
"Gleaming green-gold; combines richness and complexity with (unexpected) elegance and freshness, the conflicting streams finding the way to resolve their differences through an overpass of texture."
— 95 points from James Halliday
"The chardonnays from UMAMU have quite a strong house style. It's based on quality fruit given a decent working over in the winery. This is a combination of one fruit and struck match, with butterscotch and grapefruit complexity. Extends to a long, savoury finish. Impressive wine."
— 93 points from Ray Jordan
2015 UMAMU Estate Chardonnay
"Its regional stamp is every bit as clear as its varietal expression with layer-upon-layer of grilled cashew, peach, melon and fig and toasty oak. Where now is a difficult question." Drink till 2024
— 91 points from James Halliday
2014 UMAMU Estate Chardonnay
"A deceptive wine-the first reaction is that it is simply immaculately balanced and poised, but then the power and the zesty citrus pith and aftertaste arrive. The white peach of the mid-palate remains untarnished, as does the overall integrity of the wine."
— 96 points from James Halliday
"Medium to full yellow colour, restrained for its age, and the bouquet offers toasted hazelnut, butter and honey, in tandem with a rich, full-bodied palate. Plenty of alcohol weight, but lively acidity keeps that full-throated richness dancing."
—92 points from Huon Hooke
2012 UMAMU Estate Chardonnay
"Light straw-green; a distinguished wine, calmly moving along its journey to full maturity a couple of years hence; it is in the understated, yet totally convincing, style Umamu seeks, white peach, melon and lemony acidity sewn together by an invisible thread of oak."
— 95 points from James Halliday
(pH is 3.22)
2008 UMAMU Estate Chardonnay
"UMAMU Estate is one of Margaret River's quietest achievers; this wine shows yellow peach and ripe pineapple flavours with sweetly spiced oak and a touch of buttery richness. Soft and creamy with a final flourish of lemon acidity."
— Qantas Business Class
"An impressive chardonnay here. Bouquet shows that lovely mix of morning brioche and citrus with a subtle fusion of roasted nuts. The palate is seamlessly textured and multi-layered. Balanced oak and fruit with a preciseand long finish. Crisp minerality sustains it."
