Find your place among the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vintages in Margaret River.

Our first Cabernet Sauvignon vintage in 2008 did wonders for UMAMU Estate after it became a Jimmy Watson runner-up and won Gold at the Melbourne Wine Show.

We have pioneer parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon dating back to 1978 at the vineyard and we were determined to produce a true Margaret River-style Cabernet with strong Bordeaux undertones.

The three vintages here are just three of eight vintages rated 95+ by James Halliday (including one 97-point vintage).

Ever wanted to get to know the real Margaret River?

Ever wanted a deeper understanding of the effects of ageing on Cabernet Sauvignon?

This vertical pack lets you enjoy three of the finest vintages in Margaret River side-by-side and each with a difference of two years in the bottle.

PS – UMAMU Estate wines come with a screwcap, meaning no risk of corking.

Vertical Tasting

We love vertical tastings at UMAMU Estate.

They're an opportunity to explore the same fruit in the same parcel at different stages of ageing in the bottle.

Not only does a vertical tasting condense years of wine tasting knowledge into one evening, it's an opportunity to see how you do with wines of different maturity.

You will discover new-found love for wines you might not otherwise pick.

The vertical tasting below is special as it features our consistently top-rated Cabernet Sauvignon made from pioneer Margaret River plannings and with bags of true Margaret River character.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon

Good growing conditions created a standout vintage for Margaret River in 2013 – especially so for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Conditions during the ripening season were warm and higher than average at night.

An Indian summer that extended into autumn and allowed full development of blackcurrant and dark fruit flavours and sugars.

The result?

A wine that is shining to the heavens.

With 18 months in oak barrels and years of age in the bottle this is a great example of a Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon still very much in its prime.

If you couldn't see the label, you would never guess the vintage.

$108 a bottle.

Reviews

96 points – Halliday 2017 Edition (James Halliday)

"Deep, dark red colour with a trace of purple still remaining in the meniscus, the bouquet very briary at first, with dried herb nuances that include a touch of regional seaweed or nori character. There are violet, cassis and blueberry notes too. The wine is stately and elegant, its firmness lingering together with sweet blueberry and cassis fruit flavours. Lovely balance. A very attractive cabernet with the benefit of bottle age."

95 points – The Real Review (Huon Hooke)

"Filled to overflowing with all the goodies cabernet can offer; lashings of dark fruits centred on blackcurrant, layered tannins and high quality oak; the finish conjures up a savoury edge that adds another dimension."

2015 Cabernet Sauvignon

A low weather pattern from Cyclone Olwyn brought rain and cool night temperatures in the 2015 spring season.

Our Cabernet Sauvignon berries enjoyed an extended ripening period with more complexity.

The nose is leafy with plum and mulberry, and the tannins are silky and subtle.

It makes for a great companion to the 2013 as two examples of Margaret River in a warm and cooler season.

96 points – Halliday 2019 Edition (James Halliday)

"This is a a pretty smart Margaret River cabernet, playing fruit, tannins (yes) and oak off against each other right from the word go. The cassis, cedar and bay leaf aromas have a silken whisper, growing and evolving on the medium-bodied palate, superfine tannins bowing to the grace and richness of the long palate."

93 points – Halliday 2019 Edition (James Halliday)

"Deep, brooding dark red colour with a faint trace of purple. The bouquet is cassis-like, very cabernet varietal, the palate deliciously fruit-sweet and lush, balanced and finely structured, with restrained crushed-leaf and briary overtones. The palate is balanced and well supplied with powdery tannins that dry and cleanse the aftertaste. A very attractive cabernet to drink or cellar."

2018 Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2018 vintage felt cool but had warm daytime temperatures leading up the harvest and went on to create one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon vintages of the decade.

Margaret River was also treated to a 'mega blossom' of Marri trees (the most in living memory) and this kept bird pressure low.

A wonderful expression of all that Margaret River has to offer.

$72 a bottle.

96 points – Halliday 2021 Edition (James Halliday)

"It is elegant, balanced, very long, and a perfect vinous picture of cabernet sauvignon picked at the right moment. Supple and round, it fills the mouth, cassis/blackcurrant providing the structure and texture needed."
